Surrounded by the mountains Kozjak and Mosor, the town of Solin is located on the river Jadro, which we call the Croatian Jordan, in the middle of central Dalmatia, only 5 kilometers north of Split. Given that it is located right next to Split, unfortunately it does not get the attention it deserves. Solin is considered the cradle of ancient and old Croatian history, but also Solin is the youngest population city in the Republic of Croatia. It's time to get to know this city as it hides a rich cultural and natural heritage.
In addition to the Ancient Salona, which we have already talked about, in the center of Solin you can find "Gradina" - a site from the time of the Turks, a place where festivals and theatre performances are held in the summer months., and just across the river you will see a farm of endemic subspecies Soft-mouthed trout.
Follow the river and you will find yourself on the beautiful site of “Gašpina Mlinica” - mills from the 18th century. Gašpina mlinica is also a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee with the relaxing sounds of water.
Not far from the Gašpina mlinica there is the Hollow Church - the coronation basilica of King Zvonimir, a place where Zvonimir was crowned as King of Croatia and Dalmatia in 1076.
In a neighbourhood called Majden, a well-marked road will take you to the source of the river Jadro - a relaxing picnic area where most locals come to celebrate Labour Day, and some brave ones even decide to cool off by swimming in the summer when the river Jadro is ten degrees colder than the sea.
The smallest island in the world, also a favorite place of every child in Solin - Our Lady's Island surrounded by the River Jadro and 5 little bridges. The oldest Marian shrine in Croatia, founded by Queen Jelena more than a thousand years ago, whose church preserves its tombstone inscription, and which was visited in 1998 by St. Father Pope John Paul II.
It could be said, Solin is a place for every taste. Whether you are a nature lover, or a passionate historian. Whether you are looking for a relaxed ambience or fun. Hiking or a romantic walk?
