Split`s guardian mountain - Kozjak

Kozjak has 4 mountain huts and a few different options of paths to climb it. We have already written about it, but this time we climb Kozjak from the other side - the starting point was Kaštel Sućurac all the way to the Putalj mountain lodge, also known as one of the best viewpoints in Split.

Mountain lodge "Putalj" is located at 460 meters above sea level, and is surrounded by coniferous forests. It offers an unforgettable view of Kastela, Split, Trogir and the central Dalmatian islands. The home consists of two halls with 96 seats, a modern kitchen, a janitor's room, three eight-bed, six-bed, and six double rooms. On the ground floor are two separate rooms, each with eighteen beds. On each floor there are two toilets and a shower. The home has central heating and satellite TV.

For visitors, the home is open 24 hours every day of the week, with the restaurant opening hours from 08:00 to 23:00. Prices for accommodation, meals and drinks are affordable as in all mountaineering facilities in the Republic of Croatia.

How to get there?

Take the main state road D8 and you should reach the cemetery (Svetište Gospe na Hladi) google maps is your best friend in this case. When you reach the crossroads (on the cemetery) where the asphalt road continues on the left, and on the right macadam road, you turn right. You will see an extension where you can park your car.

You can reach the Putalj mountain lodge by following a wide macadam road which is an easier trail (very useful for the summer months, children and the elderly). This macadam road is 3.5 km long & offers you a superb view all the way.

In case you want an adventure to the top, you can also reach the well-marked path through the forest. This trail is a little more demanding. The starting point is on the left side of the extension where you parked the car. After 40 minutes of walking, you come to an extension where the church of St. Jure is located, a beautiful view, and benches where you can rest for an easier continuation to Putalj. From the church of St. George to Putalj you will need 30-40 minutes. In the video below you can see roughly what it all looks like.

Enjoy the hike & see you at the top!

PS. You can also reach Putalj by car on a macadam road.., but where is the fun in that?

Duration: 02 h

Starting height: 115 m

Destination height: 460 m

Total length: 3.5 km

Average slope: 17%

Energy consumption: 2745 kcal

Difficulty of the trail: Medium

Trail marking: Good

Seasons: Winter, Spring, Autumn, Summer can be an option if you believe you can handle the hot weather, and there should be a high level of caution - because believe me, you don't want to disturb the snakes in Dalmatia as they soak up the sun ;)
