Mosor is a compound of the Illyrian words "mole" (hill) and "sor" (source) which would therefore mean free-source in the free translation. Considering that the old Illyrians were primarily engaged in cattle breeding and farming, it is quite understandable that they gave the mountain a name because Mosor gave them everything they needed to live. 25 km long and with the highest peak of 1339 m (Veliki Kabal), Mosor is a home to mediterranean cultures and evergreen vegetation, to all kinds of wildlife, water sources, caves and pits.
The starting point of the ascent is in the village of Sitno Gornje. At the end of the village there is an extension suitable for parking several cars. Sitno Gornje (575 m) is a mountain village located on the southern slopes of Mosor, 21 km from Split. It can be reached by car or by public transport "Promet d.o.o. - Split, line no. 28 from Sukošan Street - 11 times a day (Sat and Sun 7 times). First departure at 5.30 am (Sat & Sun 6.50am), last return every day at 9.30pm. From the bus station there is a clear marked path, but if you are coming with a car the drive should be extended to the end of the village.
The marked path first leads to a 300 m asphalt road, then turns right, passes between houses through the village of Gruice, then climbs a little steeper through the built road and staircase, and exits on a macadam road (started - unfinished towards the mountain hut). There are two directions of ascent towards the mountain hut Umberto Girometta. Right along the macadam road over Kažel and left along the hiking trail over the clearing to the lodge.
The hiking trail is well marked, climbing steeply at the beginning and winding through the rocky terrain with lots of mountain flowers. The path continues on a slightly lower slope and leads to the plateau and the entrance of Kažel to the signpost at the intersection: The left path leads to the top of Ljubljan (2 h), Vickov stup (2 h), Lugarnica (an hour and half hour). and Zrnovnica (an hour and half hour). The right path is the trail for Umberto Girometta Mountain Hut.
From this intersection - ten minutes further there is another intersection of roads. Both trails lead to the lodge and there is a beautifully constructed trail that briefly leads almost to an underside, then rises moderately and continues through thick pine forests, turns right and soon leads to the Umberto Girometta hut.
From the Umberto Girometta mountain hut, the hiking trail runs along the karst goleta, slightly sharper uphill 750 m. After that, the trail enters a tall macchia suitable for climbing in hot weather. Exiting the tall macchia, the trail takes a slightly sharper climb all the way to the highest summit - Veliki kabal (Great Cable). A huge cross next to you, stunning views all around - Split and the Kaštela bay, Islands of Brač, Hvar, Šolta and Vis - on the palm of your hand will make you feel like the king/queen of the world.
