Salona was an ancient city and the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The name Salona preserves the language of the early inhabitants of this area whom the Romans called the Dalmatae, considered to be part of a larger group called the Illyrians. Salona (or Salon) is situated in today's town of Solin, in modern-day Croatia. Solin, is a small town located 5 kilometres from Split. It is well known as the cradle of ancient Croatian history. A town that hides a rich cultural and natural heritage which makes it a very interesting destination.
In the bosom of Solin lies the ancient Salona, once the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia and the largest archaeological park in Croatia, whose size is evidenced by the imposing walls with towers and gates, forum with temples, amphitheater and cemetery with Salonitan martyrs (Monasteries, Kapljuč, Marusinac). Salona is known as the birthplace of Emperor Diocletian, according to legend, in its most glorious time it was a city with over 60,000 inhabitants.
