Located at the mouth of the river Krka, the famous Šibenik was first mentioned in December 1066., and in May 1290, with the founding of the Šibenik dioceses, it gained the status of a city. Shortly afterwards, the idea arose that Šibenik should build its own church, as a symbol of its independence and autonomy. It took a hundred years to build the famous Cathedral of St. Jacob, which is considered one of the most important Renaissance buildings in the country. It is the only cathedral in Europe, made entirely of stone, without any binding material.
Šibenik is the only city in Croatia and one of five in the world with two UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the Cathedral of St. Jakov and the fortress of St. Nicholas. Fortress of St. Nicholas is only one of the four fortresses that guard Šibenik, but the only one that does so from the sea. Although the fortress can only be entered from the sea, you can also observe it from a small peninsula and a beautiful promenade on the canal of St. Ante. On the mainland we can find Fortress of St. Mihovil, the Barone Fortress and, the Fortress of St. John.
This town is also adorned with two national parks - Krka and Kornati. It is the Krka National Park that is responsible for the fact that Šibenik is the first city in the world to receive public lighting on alternating electricity in 1895 (August 28). The Jaruga hydroelectric power plant on the Krka River was put into operation two days later than the hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls in the United States. However, the people of Šibenik received electricity on the same day, the inhabitants of Buffalo only a year later, in 1896.
Many great artists grew on the narrow streets of Šibenik - the great basketball player Dražen Petrović (Croatian Mozzart), Dario Šarić, actor Goran Višnjić, the first Croatian Saint Nikola Tavelić was born in Šibenik, the famous pianist Maksim Mrvica, and some of the most famous Croatian artists.
Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, four Fortresses, two National parks, 2851 city stairs, as well as the largest number of baroque organs, architecture, history, monuments, green windows, countless number of stories and the PEOPLE. What do you think? Doesn’t it sound artistic?
