Central Dalmatia is full of cultural attractions, unbelievably beautiful landscapes and excellent gastronomy. With its long history and stories that are woven into every stone, it is an ideal destination for relaxation, fun and active holidays.
Spring is the most beautiful time in the Dalmatian hinterland, when numerous tourists, nature lovers visit the magical lakes, forests and mountains, ancient remains, cold caves and nature parks. Among an incredible range of experiences, it is up to you dear readers to explore some of everything to your liking and your own preferences and opportunities.
If you find yourself traveling the Dalmatian hinterland, do not miss to visit the natural phenomena that the whole world is talking about. Imotski lakes Blue and Red are natural values of world significance. Protected nature monuments by their beauty toured the globe. Blue Lake is a favorite picnic area for both tourists and locals looking for nature vacations and atypical beach fun. The Blue Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in Croatia, leading to the landscaped stairs, making it a favorite swimming spot for the summer months. When the lake dries, the enterprising residents traditionally play football at its bottom.
The Red Lake is named after the red rocks at the edge of the lake. The Red Lake, because of the steep cliffs that surround it, is unfortunately not accessible. This karst pit is about 528 meters high and the depth of the lake is about 281 meters, which, according to some, may be the deepest lake in Europe. The Red Lake due to the steep cliffs surrounding it cannot be accessed, but if you get lucky you may run into adventurers who occasionally visit the Red Lake to take a walk on a cable above the lake.
An initiative has been launched in the town of Imotski to include the Red and Blue Lakes and the areas around them in the UNESCO list of geoparks. A project is being prepared to build a center with various facilities for visitors and researchers. The study of Red Lake, a karst phenomenon that attracts visitors from all over the world eager for adrenaline, continues.
Preparation of application documentation is in process. This will be followed in 2019 by the necessary marking, signaling and preparation for implementation, and if all goes according to plan, in June 2020, Red and Blue Lake will be granted UNESCO Geopark status.
This would be the third UNESCO geopark in Croatia. The Papuk Nature Park is a UNESCO-protected Croatian geopark, and UNESCO is currently expected to receive protection for the Vis archipelago.
